Preparation on the flats is mostly about visibility, sun protection, comfort, and having the right tackle ready for current conditions. Confirm supplied gear with David before packing or buying equipment.
Tackle to discuss with the guide
Many bonefish anglers use an 8-weight, 9-foot fly rod, a saltwater reel with a smooth drag, floating line, suitable leaders, and proven shrimp or crab patterns. Wind, fish size, and the day’s approach may change the recommendation.
Polarized vision and sun protection
Quality polarized sunglasses help cut glare and protect the eyes. Add a brimmed hat, UPF clothing, reef-conscious sunscreen, and lip protection. A lightweight rain layer can also be useful.
Footwear and personal items
Ask whether the day involves wading or fishing entirely from the skiff. Bring footwear appropriate to the plan, plus water, any required medication, and a waterproof place for a phone or camera.
Pack light and confirm first
Space on a flats skiff is limited. Ask what rods, flies, food, drinks, and safety equipment are included so you bring only what you need.
